Season Note: The color of dulse changes from brownish to purple-reddish depending on the season.

Dulse is one of our favorite seaweeds, both visually and in taste. Dulse is also tender and can be enjoyed without soaking. This is not the case with all seaweeds.

Dulse Flakes at a Glance

Origin: Ireland, from wild harvest

Production: Air-dried (raw food) and slightly "tobacco moist," as one customer described the dulse.

Ingredients: Dulse (Palmaria palmata)

Allergens: Seaweeds contain no allergens. However, as it is a natural product, traces of mollusks, crustaceans, or sand may be present.

Storage: Cool and dry

Warning: Seaweeds are naturally rich in iodine. Excessive intake of iodine can lead to thyroid function disorders. Daily intake must be adjusted to personal needs.

Of the various types of seaweed we offer, some are regularly tested for heavy metals.

Using Dulse Flakes

This dulse is finely chopped and can therefore be easily used as a seasoning for salads, rice, potato, and pasta dishes. Also recommended as a snack!

Dulse has become increasingly popular since the books by Anthony William and can, of course, be used according to his recommendations.

For smoothies, our dulse powder might be more suitable if you don't want any pieces in your smoothie.

Great

I am very satisfied with the product and the speedy, efficient delivery.

The only suggestion I would make is to switch the inner packaging from aluminum to paper (or a more eco-friendly alternative).

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your positive feedback and also for considering the packaging. I am really happy that you pay attention to such details. :-) We spent a lot of time researching viable packaging. We ended up with this pouch. It is actually fully compostable! That being said, we do keep an eye on technological developments to see whether there might be something even better.

Here are more details on the pouch. The pouch has three layers: Natural Kraft paper / NKME / PBS pouch — layer-by-layer (outside → inside)

Natural Kraft paper. Function: mechanical strength, stiffness, print surface, natural appearance
Not a barrier layer.

NKME (NatureFlex™ metallised cellulose): Function: primary barrier. Provides oxygen, moisture, and light barrier via thin metallisation on regenerated cellulose. Compostable (industrial) and plastic-free.

PBS (polybutylene succinate) sealant layer. Function: heat sealability and product contact layer. Bio-based / biodegradable polyester; replaces PE as the sealing layer.

To clarify, the inner layer is not aluminium foil. It is a metallised cellulose film, where an extremely thin aluminium coating (measured in *nano*metres) is applied to plant-based cellulose. This layer provides essential protection against oxygen, moisture, and light, which paper alone cannot achieve for the dulse.

The aluminium content is miniscule, only a trace amount. It does not form a separate foil layer and does not come in contact with the contents. During composting, the cellulose breaks down fully, while the aluminium disperses as inert aluminum oxide residue within accepted compostability standards. This structure is certified compostable (industrial composting). We chose the pouch to balance product safety, shelf life, and environmental impact.

Pure paper as an inner barrier would, unfortunately, significantly reduce protection and lead to faster spoilage and food waste.

At present, baed on our research and testing, this solution offers one of the best eco-performance options available for dry food packaging, in particular with our preference for a compostable pouch.
